What car rental in Azerbaijan costs
Car rental in Azerbaijan is quoted per day, and every rate below includes compulsory ICBARI insurance. The deposit is 200 to 300 USD depending on the car. Pay it in cash and it comes back at the desk the same minute you hand the keys over.
| Class | Cars | From | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 20 | 25 USD | City driving and motorway runs |
| Comfort | 23 | 35 USD | Long days behind the wheel |
| SUV | 17 | 48 USD | Mountain roads and winter |
| Business | 21 | 65 USD | Meetings and airport pickups |
| Minivan | 6 | 75 USD | Groups of seven to nine |
| Wedding | 8 | 75 USD | One day, photographs |
A few cars are priced in Azerbaijani manat rather than dollars. The card shows the currency, and we confirm the exact daily rate before you book.
Fuel, washing, parking and traffic fines sit outside the rate. A wash is 9 USD for a saloon and 11 USD for an SUV, and only if you bring the car back dirty. Fuel goes back at the level you got it.
How far the country is from Baku
Azerbaijan is small enough that most of it is a day trip from the capital, which is why car rental in Azerbaijan is mostly day trips out of Baku rather than long one way transfers. These are road distances from central Baku.
| Where | From Baku | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Absheron loop | 90 km | Yanar Dag, Ateshgah, the coast |
| Candy Cane Mountains | 95 km | Red and white striped ridges |
| Shamakhi | 120 km | Vineyards, the Juma mosque |
| Altiagac | 120 km | Forest and a national park |
| Quba | 170 km | Orchards, the gateway to the mountains |
| Ismayilli | 170 km | Villages and river valleys |
| Lahij | 175 km | Coppersmiths, a cobbled main street |
| Nabran | 190 km | Caspian beaches in the north |
| Gabala | 220 km | About three hours, mountains and a cable car |
| Khinalig | 225 km | A village at 2,200 metres |
| Lankaran | 245 km | Tea plantations near the Iranian border |
| Sheki | 300 km | About four hours, the Khan’s palace |
| Naftalan | 325 km | Oil baths |
| Ganja | 350 km | The second city |
A one week loop taking in the north and the west covers about 1,600 km. That is well inside a single rental, because we do not cap mileage.
Which car for which road
Car rental in Azerbaijan splits along one line: asphalt or mountain. The motorway north out of Baku is new asphalt and easy in any car. The climbs to Khinalig and Shahdag are a different matter, and so is any mountain road between December and March.
- City and motorway. A Toyota Corolla at 52 USD a day or a Chevrolet Spark at 25 USD covers Baku, Gabala and Sheki without trouble.
- Long days at the wheel. A Hyundai Sonata at 75 USD is the quieter choice for 300 km stretches.
- Mountain roads. A Toyota Prado at 99 USD or a Land Cruiser 200 at 110 USD handles the Khinalig road and winter passes.
- Groups. A Kia Carnival at 80 USD seats nine.

Rules you need before you drive
- Speed limits are 60 in town, 90 on rural roads and 110 on motorways.
- The alcohol limit is zero and it is enforced.
- Almost every fine comes from a camera, not from a patrol car.
- The rental car may not leave Azerbaijan. That includes Georgia and Iran.
- Fines reach us after you have gone, so they come out of the deposit or are billed later.
