Short answer. Adding a second driver in Baku is simple. The second driver comes to the handover with a licence and a passport. Their name goes on the contract. Anyone not named on that contract is not insured, whatever they promise you.

How does adding a second driver in Baku work?
A second driver brings a licence and passport, then signs the contract. Three things, all at handover.
- The second driver brings their own licence, the original card.
- They bring a passport with the entry stamp or visa.
- Their name goes on the contract, and they sign it.
The whole process takes a few minutes.
Do they need to be there in person?
Yes, at the Baku handover. We check the licence against the person.
A photograph of a licence sent by message is not enough.
If they land later, tell us and we add them when they arrive.
The second driver can come to the office, or we come to the hotel.
What do they need to bring?
| Document | Needed |
|---|---|
| National driving licence, original | Always |
| Passport with entry stamp or visa | Always |
| International driving permit | Depends on their country |
In Azerbaijan the permit question follows their licence, not the first driver’s.
Two people from different countries can have different answers.
The full country table is in our documents guide.
What happens if an unnamed person drives?
If an unnamed person drives, Azerbaijani insurance stops applying. The whole risk fits in one sentence.
If there is an accident, the cover is void and you pay for the damage.
The compulsory policy still pays the other party, not your car.
Our insurance guide sets out what remains.
Why do people share the driving here?
People share the driving because the distances are longer than they look.
- Baku to Ganja is four hours each way.
- Baku to Khinalig is four hours, and the last part is mountain road.
- A week long loop runs to about 1,600 km.
Two drivers make those days comfortable rather than exhausting.
Is there an age limit?
Our Baku rules for the first driver apply to the second.
Licence held for a reasonable period, and an age that suits the car class.
Luxury cars carry stricter conditions than an economy saloon.
Ask us when you book if you are not sure. We answer straight.
What about a driver we provide instead?
A driver from our Baku office removes the licence question entirely.
Our drivers are priced on a ten hour day.
A driver suits a wine trip, a long transfer or a business day of meetings.
See our car with a driver page.
One last note on swapping mid trip. Both names must already be on the contract.
Deciding to swap on a mountain road at four in the afternoon is too late.
Add the second driver at handover even if you think you will not need them.
One more thing about the licence itself. We need the plastic card, not a copy.
A photograph on a phone is not accepted, and neither is a scan.
Bring the original even if it never leaves the wallet after that.
