Do you need a 4×4 in Azerbaijan for a tourist week?
No, you do not need a 4×4 for a tourist week. Almost every visitor drives paved roads.
Baku to Quba, Gabala, Sheki and Shamakhi are asphalt highways.
A saloon does every one of them in dry weather.
Snow, mud and loose gravel are what change the answer.
Which roads are paved?
All the main routes are paved: Quba, Gabala, Sheki and Shamakhi. Visitors ask about these Azerbaijani routes most.
| Route | Distance | Surface | Car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baku to Quba | 170 km | Highway | Any |
| Baku to Gabala | 220 km | Highway | Any |
| Baku to Sheki | 300 km | Highway | Any |
| Quba to Khinalig | 53 km | Narrow asphalt | Crossover |
| Quba to Shahdag | 28 km | Mountain asphalt | Crossover |
The Khinalig road was rebuilt and is asphalt the whole way.
Our Khinalig guide describes that climb in detail.
When does four wheel drive help?
- Snow. December to March above 1,500 metres.
- Gravel. Village tracks past Lahij and Ismayilli.
- Wet grass and mud. Parking at mountain guesthouses.
- Steep gradients. Short climbs with a loose surface.
Winter is the honest case for a 4×4.
Our winter guide lists what changes above 1,500 metres.
What is the difference between a crossover and a 4×4?
A crossover sits higher and takes Azerbaijani rough patches better than a saloon.
Most crossovers drive two wheels only. Two wheel drive is fine on wet asphalt.
A true 4×4 sends power to all four wheels.
A Land Cruiser and a Defender do that. A Tucson does not.
Does a 4×4 make mountain driving safer?
A 4×4 makes mountain driving only partly safer. On an Azerbaijani slope it helps the car move, not brake.
Tyres and speed decide how a car stops on ice.
We fit winter tyres from November at no extra cost.
A 4×4 on summer tyres stops worse than a saloon on winter ones.
Our mountain road guide covers what to check before you climb.
What does a big 4×4 cost to run?
Fuel is the main cost in Azerbaijan, and the gap is large.
AI-92 petrol costs 1.10 AZN a litre and AI-95 costs 1.60 AZN.
At 8 litres per 100 km, 1,000 km costs about 88 AZN.
At 14 litres, the same 1,000 km costs about 154 AZN.
Our fuel guide has the full price table.
Which car should you take?
