Fuel is the cheapest part of a road trip in Azerbaijan. Cheap fuel is why driving beats taxis outside the city.
Why is fuel so cheap here?
Azerbaijan produces its own oil and refines it locally. Retail prices are regulated by the state.
State regulation is why nothing changes between stations or regions.
Regulation also means prices move rarely, and only by decision. Prices do not float week to week.
Where do you refuel?
You refuel at stations across Baku and along the main highways. Socar is the largest network.
Stations thin out on mountain roads. The route to Khinalug or Lahij has long empty stretches.
One habit fixes this. Refuel at half a tank, not at the warning light.
Most stations have an attendant who fills the car for you. Say the amount in manat or ask for a full tank.
Can you pay by card?
Yes, you can pay by card at almost every station around Baku. Small rural stations may want cash.
Keep 20 to 30 manat in the car for that case.
What fuel rule does the rental contract use?
Most companies in Baku give you the car with a set fuel level. You return it at the same level.
Photograph the fuel gauge at handover. The photo takes five seconds and settles arguments.

An economy car uses 6 to 7 litres per 100 km, a large SUV 12.

On Azerbaijani roads the gap between a small car and a large SUV is modest. On a 600 km week the gap is about 35 AZN.
Does a hybrid save money?
Yes, a hybrid saves money on fuel. Hybrids are common in Azerbaijan now and use much less in city traffic.
On a week of city driving the saving is real but small, maybe 20 AZN.

What is our fuel policy?
Our fuel policy is simple: the car comes back at the level you got it.
- Same level back. You return the car with the fuel it had.
- No refuelling fee if the level matches.
- No mileage limit, so fuel is your only running cost.
- Deposit 200 to 300 USD, in cash or blocked on a card.
- A hybrid cuts the bill on long trips. Ask for the Toyota Prius or Corolla Cross.

You return the car at the level you received it. Photograph the gauge at pickup.
Are there electric charging points?
Electric charging points are growing in number in Baku, and far fewer outside. Plan carefully before a long trip.
