Short answer. Renting a car in Baku vs taxis depends on one thing: how long you stay. You pay about 126 AZN against 210 AZN for a car. Add one trip out of the city and that flips. A week with two day trips costs about 410 AZN by car. The same week on taxis costs about 620 AZN.

What does each option cost per unit?

A short taxi ride in central Baku costs 5 to 8 AZN. An economy rental car costs from 25 USD a day.

Fuel prices are set nationally. Every station in the country charges the same.

Parking is free from 22:00 to 07:00. Street parking is also free on Sundays. The first 15 minutes are free everywhere.

Three days in the city: which is cheaper?

Two people, three days in Baku. Four short rides a day. A hotel in the centre. One return airport trip.

Taxis win here. The gap is 84 AZN. You also skip the parking problem in the old town.

Is your trip a long weekend in the centre? Then do not rent a car. We would rather say that than sell you three days you do not need.

Seven days with two day trips: which is cheaper?

Seven days with two day trips costs about 413 AZN by car. Taxis and hired trips come to about 622 AZN. The same couple as before, one week, about 700 km. One day at Gobustan, one day trip to Gabala.

The car wins by about 200 AZN. And that number is still too kind to the taxi.

A hired trip buys you a driver on someone else’s clock. With your own car you leave Gobustan when you are done. You can stop at Bibi-Heybat on the way back.

Two weeks around the country

Two weeks with Gabala, Sheki, Quba and Absheron is about 1,500 km of driving.

At this length it is not close. A car costs about 40% less over two weeks. Rates also drop on longer bookings.

Which costs are easy to forget?

Parking in central Baku is real money. Around the Old City the paid zones are enforced. Budget 1 to 2 AZN an hour and use the AzParking app.

Have not paid by 22:00 the same day? Then 10 AZN is added. A parking ticket itself costs 20 to 50 AZN.

Cameras issue most fines. The cameras are dense on main roads and highways. Limits are 60 km/h in town, 90 on rural roads, 110 on motorways.

Going 21 to 40 over costs 50 AZN. Going 41 to 60 over costs 200 AZN. The fine can arrive after you fly home. Read what the contract says about fines before you sign.

The alcohol limit is 0.00. Do your evenings include wine? Then take taxis, whatever the sums say.

Taxis get scarce when you need them. Rain, rush hour, and the road back from Gobustan at dusk. None of the numbers above count twenty minutes in the road.

Renting a car in Baku vs taxis: which should you choose?

Take taxis if you stay two to four days in the centre. The Old City, the promenade and the Flame Towers are all walkable.

Take a rental car if any of this is true. You stay a week or more. You want Gobustan, Gabala, Sheki, Quba or Lankaran. You travel with children or heavy luggage.

A third option people miss mixes the two. Use taxis in the city. Rent a car only for the days you leave town. A car with a driver also works for one long trip.
