Short answer. Gobustan is 65 km south of Baku, about an hour by car. Any car reaches the rock art museum on a paved road. The mud volcanoes are different. The last few kilometres are dirt and rutted. Take a crossover or an SUV, not a low city car.

What is actually there?
Two separate things, and people confuse them.
The rock carvings. Thousands of petroglyphs cut into stone, some 12,000 years old. There is a modern museum and marked paths.
The mud volcanoes. Small grey cones that bubble cold mud. They sit about 15 km further on, off the main road.
Most visitors want both. That means two different road surfaces in one day.
How do you get there?

The highway south is wide and fast. Keep to 90 km/h outside towns and 60 through them.
The last five kilometres are the whole problem. After rain they turn to sticky clay.
Which car do you need?
For the museum alone, anything works. An economy car is fine.
For the volcanoes, take ground clearance. A crossover or SUV handles it in dry weather.
Local drivers wait at the turn-off with old Soviet off-roaders. They will take you the last stretch for a fee.
That option exists for a reason. If it has rained, use it instead of your rental car.

A hired car with a driver for the same trip costs about 120 AZN. You then leave when the driver wants to leave.
When should you go?
Spring and autumn are best. There is almost no shade at either site.
In July the stone gets very hot by midday. Go early and bring water.
After heavy rain, skip the volcanoes or hire a local driver. The mud road is genuinely bad.
How long does it take?
Half a day covers the museum and the carvings comfortably.
A full day covers both sites without rushing. Allow an hour each way for driving.
Many people add Bibi-Heybat mosque on the way back. It sits right by the road.
What else is on the same road?
The route south passes two things worth ten minutes each.

The oil fields. You drive past working pumpjacks and salt flats. It looks like nowhere else.
Neither needs a detour. Both are on the main highway.
What should you take with you?
- Water, more than you think
- A hat and sunscreen, there is no shade
- Shoes you do not mind getting muddy
- Cash in small notes for entry and the local driver
Mud from the volcanoes stains. Do not wear white and do not sit in the car in muddy clothes.
Common questions
Can I reach the volcanoes in a normal car?
In dry weather, sometimes. After rain, no. Use a local driver instead.
How long is the drive from Baku?
About one hour to the museum on a good paved road.
Is a guide needed?
No. The museum has English signage and the paths are marked.
Is it worth going in winter?
Yes, it is quiet and cool. The mud road is the only risk.
Can I combine it with another site?
Yes. Bibi-Heybat mosque is on the road back to Baku.
Which car do you recommend?
