Short answer. Automatic car rental in Azerbaijan is the norm, not the exception. Petrol is the normal fuel and AI-92 costs 1.10 AZN a litre. Hybrids are common now and cheaper in city traffic. Electric cars work in Baku but not on long trips. Choose by where you drive.

Updated 9 August 2026.

Is automatic car rental in Azerbaijan standard?

Yes, nearly all rental cars here are automatic. Manual rental cars are rare.

The share surprises visitors from Europe and India, where manual is still normal.

An automatic is good news in Baku. City traffic is stop and start, and an automatic makes that easier.

Need a manual specifically? Ask us before booking, because we cannot always find one.

Which fuel should you choose?

Choose AI-92 at 1.10 AZN a litre unless the car requires AI-95.

FuelPrice per litreBest for
AI-92 petrol1.10 AZNMost cars, most trips
AI-95 petrol1.60 AZNOnly if the car requires it
Diesel1.00 AZNMinibuses and long distances
Hybriduses petrol, less of itCity driving and long stays
Electriccharging, not fuelBaku only

Prices are set nationally, so every station charges the same.

Putting AI-95 in a car built for AI-92 changes nothing except your bill.

Is a hybrid worth it?

A hybrid in Azerbaijan depends entirely on how long you stay.

A hybrid uses much less fuel in slow city traffic. On the open highway the gap narrows.

TripPetrol carHybrid
One week in the city, 300 kmabout 26 AZNabout 16 AZN
One week touring, 700 kmabout 62 AZNabout 45 AZN
One month in the city, 1,200 kmabout 106 AZNabout 63 AZN

On a week the saving is small. On a month it is real money.

Ask which cars in our fleet are hybrid when you enquire.

What about electric cars?

An electric car works in Baku and nowhere else yet. Charging points are growing in the city but sparse outside it.

So an electric car works for city days and Absheron. An electric car does not reach Sheki or Quba.

Do not plan a mountain trip around finding a charger. Charger coverage is not a safe assumption yet.

Petrol or diesel for a long trip?

Diesel in Azerbaijan costs 1.00 AZN a litre and uses less over distance. Cheaper diesel sounds decisive.

In practice most passenger cars here are petrol. Diesel mainly appears in vans and minibuses.

If you rent a minivan for a group, it may well be diesel. Diesel is a bonus there, not a reason to choose.

Does engine size matter here?

Engine size matters less here than in Europe. Azerbaijan has no engine-size road tax for a visitor.

What matters is the mountain roads. A small engine struggles on the climbs to Lahij or Khinalug.

For those routes take a crossover or SUV. For the city an economy car is better in every way.

What about the air conditioning?

Check the air conditioning at handover, every time, in any season.

Baku reaches 34 degrees in August with high humidity. A weak system ruins a day trip.

Run it for a minute before you drive away. Say something immediately if it is not cold.

How do you choose in one minute?

Take an economy car for the city and a crossover for day trips. Mountains and winter need an SUV.

  1. City only, short stay. Economy petrol car.
  2. City only, a month or more. Hybrid.
  3. City plus day trips. Crossover.
  4. Mountains or winter. SUV with proper tyres.
  5. Five or more people. Minivan, whatever the fuel.

What do you check at handover?

Five minutes at the Baku handover save every argument later. The list is short.

  • Fuel level. Photograph the gauge. You return it at the same level.
  • Mileage. Photograph it too, even though there is no limit.
  • Every panel. Walk around the car and film it.
  • The gearbox. Drive fifty metres before you leave the street.
  • Air conditioning. In summer this matters more than the engine.

Hybrids start in silence. The silence surprises people the first time.

The dashboard shows a green ready light instead of engine noise.
