A Flat Tyre in Azerbaijan: What to Do and Who Pays

A flat front tyre on a car

Short answer. A flat tyre in Azerbaijan is the most common trip problem. Nothing else comes close. Every car we rent carries a spare, a jack and a wrench. Tyre shops are cheap and everywhere. Call us before you pay for anything.

Why is a flat tyre in Azerbaijan so common?

Stone edges, kerbs and building debris cause most flat tyres here. Three reasons, none of them about the main highways.

  • Stone edges. Mountain roads are patched and the verges are sharp.
  • Kerbs in the city. Parking half on the pavement is normal here.
  • Building work. Nails and screws end up on the road near sites.

The highways themselves are good. The last kilometre is what gets you.

What do you do when it happens?

When a tyre goes flat, pull off the road and put the triangle out. Then call us.

  1. Slow down gently. Do not brake hard.
  2. Pull off the carriageway onto firm ground.
  3. Hazard lights on, warning triangle behind the car.
  4. Everyone out and onto the verge.
  5. Call us before you change anything.

On an Azerbaijani mountain road, put the triangle a long way back. Bends hide you.

What is in the car?

The car carries a spare wheel, a jack, a triangle and a first aid kit.

ItemWhere it usually lives
Spare wheelUnder the boot floor
Jack and wrenchBeside the spare
Warning triangleIn the boot, required by law
First aid kitIn the boot or under a seat

Ask us to show you all four at the Baku handover. The walk-through takes a minute and saves an hour.

Should you change it yourself?

Change the tyre yourself only on a safe verge. Do it only if you have before.

On a narrow mountain road with no verge, do not. Wait for us.

Many spares are the small space saver type.

Space savers are limited to 80 km/h and are not made for a long drive.

Where do you get it repaired?

An Azerbaijani tyre shop. The sign says təkər or vulkanizasiya.

Tyre shops sit on the edge of every town and beside most petrol stations.

A puncture repair is cheap and takes about twenty minutes.

Call us first. If we agree to the repair, we handle the bill.

Who pays?

CauseWho pays
Nail or road debrisUsually us
Kerb strike or pothole at speedCase by case
Damage from an off-road trackThe driver
Driving on a flat and ruining the rimThe driver

The last row is the expensive one in Azerbaijan. Stop as soon as you feel it.

How do you avoid it?

Avoid a flat by checking the pressure before a long day. Air at Azerbaijani petrol stations is usually free.

Slow down for potholes rather than swerving around them.

Do not park with two wheels up a kerb, however normal it looks.

Our mountain road guide lists the rest of the pre-trip checks.

One more thing worth knowing. A slow puncture shows up as a pull to one side.

If the steering goes heavy or the car drifts, stop and look at the tyres.

Catching it early is the difference between a repair and a new tyre.

Anything worse than a tyre is covered in our breakdown guide.
