Short answer. Petrol stations in Azerbaijan are frequent on the highways and thin in the villages. Most are staffed, so you do not fill the car yourself. AI-92 costs 1.10 AZN a litre. Cards work at branded stations and not always elsewhere.

How do petrol stations in Azerbaijan work?
Petrol stations here work with an attendant who fills the car. You stay in the seat or stand beside it.
Say the fuel and the amount. Either litres or manat, both are normal.
Saying “full” works too. The word is understood at every station.
You pay after, at the pump or in the shop.
What fuel do you ask for?
| Fuel | Price a litre | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|
| AI-92 petrol | 1.10 AZN | Most rental cars and taxis |
| AI-95 petrol | 1.60 AZN | Newer and larger engines |
| Diesel | 1.00 AZN | Vans, minibuses, some SUVs |
Our Baku office writes the right fuel on the contract and the fuel cap.
Put the wrong one in and the repair is not covered. Read the cap before you speak.
Can you pay by card?
At branded Azerbaijani stations, yes. Visa and Mastercard both work.
At small independent stations in the regions, often not.
Keep 50 AZN in cash for the whole trip. Fifty manat covers any gap.
Fuller detail sits in our fuel price guide.
Where do stations get scarce?
Stations get scarce past Quba, past Shamakhi and above Lankaran.
- Past Quba on the Khinalig road. Nothing for 53 km.
- Past Shamakhi on the Lahij gorge road.
- Above Lankaran towards Lerik.
- Between Yevlakh and Naftalan on the western road.
The rule is simple. Fill up in the last town, not in the next village.
What are the opening hours?
| Type | Hours |
|---|---|
| Branded, main highways | 24 hours |
| Branded, in towns | Usually 24 hours |
| Independent, regional | Often close by nine or ten |

Is the fuel quality reliable?
Fuel quality is reliable at the branded Azerbaijani chains. The branded chains are the ones we use ourselves.
Very cheap fuel at an unmarked station is worth avoiding.
Bad fuel is not a common problem, but it is an expensive one.
Branded logos appear every few kilometres, so there is no need to gamble.
What else is at a station?
A station has a shop, toilets, free air and often a car wash. More than you expect on the main roads.
- A shop with water, coffee and food.
- Clean toilets, which matter on a four hour drive.
- Air for the tyres, usually free.
- A car wash at the larger sites.
Stations are the natural stops on a long day. Our drive to Ganja uses them.
One note on the fuel rule in the contract. You get the car at a level and return it there.
Nobody charges you for the fuel you used, and nobody refunds extra you left.
Take a photo of the gauge at handover. The photo settles any question later.
One more habit worth copying from local drivers. Locals fill up on the way out of town.
Stations on the city edge are cheaper to reach and never busy.
What is our fuel rule?
